Praise for the
Milkweed Triptych
"A major talent... I can't wait to see more."
—George R. R. Martin
"Mad English warlocks battling twisted Nazi psychics? Yes please, thank you. Tregillis's debut has a white-knuckle plot, beautiful descriptions, and complex characters-- an unstoppable Vickers of a novel."
Cory Doctorow on Bitter Seeds
"Ian Tregillis triumphantly concludes his astonishing, brilliant, pulse-pounding debut trilogy, The Milkweed Triptych."
Cory Doctorow on Necessary Evil
"Tregillis' conclusion of the Milkweed Triptych is the pièce de résistance of the series. Necessary Evil is a perfect marriage of science fiction, fantasy and alternate history."
RT Book Reviews (4.5 stars, Top Pick) on Necessary Evil
"Darkly fascinating…A thoroughly fascinating conclusion to an imaginative tour de force."
Kirkus on Necessary Evil
"A cross between the devious, character-driven spy fiction of early John le Carré and the mad science fantasy of the X-Men... Despite the jaw-dropping backdrop and oblique plotting, the narrative is driven by character and personal circumstance...
Grim indeed, yet eloquent and utterly compelling."
—Kirkus on The Coldest War
"The characters come alive via [Tregillis's] imaginative dialogue and his storyline will keep readers spellbound and on the edge of their seats with an intense sci-fi/alternate history thriller plot."
RT Book Reviews (4.5 stars, Top Pick) on The Coldest War
"Well-drawn characters and a feel for time and place make this an excellent journey into an alternate Britain."
—Library Journal on Bitter Seeds
"Engrossing... Tregillis ably mixes cold war paranoia with his mythology."

Release Day: The Coldest War is Officially Out
Tuesday, July 17 2012, 07:00 AM

OK—as you might notice from reading Boing Boing this morning, today's the day: at long last The Coldest War is finally in US bookstores and ebookstores today! It's now available in hardcover and DRM-FREE ebook editions.  Hooray!  [The Orbit UK/ANZ edition is scheduled for February, 2013.  And the US/UK editions of Necessary Evil are both scheduled for April, 2013.]

It seems like a strange thing to celebrate, since the audiobook has been available from Audible since January, and since copies of the book arrived in readers' gardens as early as last week.  But today makes it about as official as it can get.  So again, hooray!  I've been waiting a long time for this, so I'm just pleased as pleased can be.  And The Coldest War is as published as a book can be.

Purchase links, and more about DRM-free ebooks, below the cut.

There are purchase links aplenty here.  (The correct link to Audible's edition is this one; I'll fix that soon.)  The DRM FREE ebook version is available in Kindle, NookiBook, Sony Reader, and Kobo formats.  And probably others.

The timing of this release is very fortuitous, as it puts The Coldest War ebook out just after Tor dropped digitial rights management of its e-editions.  Hooray for that, too!

ETA: A guest blog post that I wrote for RT Book Reviews just went up.  They really liked The Coldest War (hooray!), and very generously invited me to write a little bit about how I came to use the Cold War as the setting for a sf/fantasy novel.  I had a lot of fun with this blog post.

Congrats! That's a good review from Doctorow. B&N told me they shipped my copy last night.

Congrats!!! - Tom Porter, Tuesday, July 17 2012, 09:56 AM
Ian,

Well earned congratulations. I can't wait for my copy to show up. (I'm cheap and opted for free slow-boat shipping, so it will still be a couple of days).

Thank you very much, Steve and Tom and Linda! I really appreciate it. I hope the purchase proves worthwhile :)

(I always opt for slow-boat shipping, too.)

Congratulations Ian. I've been telling anyone who'll listen and some that won't how great Bitter seeds is.. The Aussie market isn't massive but every little bit counts..

Questions though, is the electronic edition of The coldest war not available down here? The Kindle link says not currently available.. Been marking off the 17th so be gutted if I have to wait.

Congratulations again.. Looking forward to many more books from yiu

Hi, Nick! I'm deeply grateful for your efforts to spread the word. Thank you! You're 100% right: every bit helps. Word of mouth is by far the most valuable thing for an author, particularly a small-fry like me.

I have a feeling that the electronic editions of TCW might not be available in Australia until the Orbit print edition comes out in February. I realize now that I should have been a little more specific in my blog post above; I'm going to edit it to address this. I apologize for omitting glaring details like this. The excitement overwhelmed me and I got carried away :)

Honestly, though -- I am genuinely sorry if this means you have to wait even longer than you already have!. I hope the book proves worthy of your patience if and when you finally get to read it. The folks at Orbit UK have done a magnificent job with the books, if that helps...

Re: untitled - Nick, Thursday, July 19 2012, 05:45 AM
You're most welcome. I hope you can, but more importantly, want to write full time one day soon.

Given the tribulations you've been through with the publication of this I suspect I can forgive you for being a little over-excited as well regarding the release. I know other Authors who arent even told that their books (particularly ebook editions) arent available in certain countries at the same time. Damn shame they don't line them all up..usually we aren't to far behind down here but I'll be having to order a hardback from the US. The Silver ling to the "further wait-cloud" is that it will look much nicer on the bookshelf and my missus can't moan at me for buying another book to go on a overwhelmingly full spare room if I have no choice now can she. (Kindles sure do save space in the long run). Of course, this means I'll have to track down a Bitter Seeds hardback to go with it.. TCW can't go on a shelf on its own.

Success! - Nick, Thursday, July 19 2012, 06:36 AM
Wow....I just learnt got told by my 'all to clever an he knows it' younger brother how to set my Australian kindle up to purchase books from the American store.....sooooo I now have the coldest war in my hot little hands. Can't wait to start.

Still ordered the hardback though, it's not lying to my wife if I just neglect to tell her I managed to get the ebook edition is it.

Re: untitled; Success! - Ian, Thursday, July 19 2012, 09:51 AM
I completely understand what it's like to have too many books and not enough room for them. Just last night I was cursing myself that I haven't gotten around to buying more bookcases (yet).

So thank you very much for your willingness to sacrifice space for my book! I hope you enjoy it.

LOVED IT! - Linda Sing, Thursday, July 19 2012, 06:30 PM
Loved, loved, LOVED The Coldest War! I heard about it on Boing Boing last month, downloaded a preview of Bitter Seeds to see if I was interested, GOT HOOKED, ordered Bitter Seeds and plowed through it, waited impatiently for July 17 and the release of The Coldest War, and finished it up this morning. (I would have finished it on the 18th, but I forgot my Kindle - damn! - and fretted until I could get back to it) I can't wait for the third book, and look forward to anything else you write. Great characters, complex and well-written emotions, wonderfully creepy villians and just a great story all the way around. Keep up the good work!

Re: LOVED IT! - Ian, Thursday, July 19 2012, 10:12 PM
Hi, Linda, and thank you very much! I'm so glad you enjoyed both books. I'll have to write a longer book next time, so that you get more than one day's worth of reading out of it ;-)

The feedback means a lot. Thanks for the comment. And I hope you enjoy Necessary Evil, too!

Well worth the wait - Brook, Friday, July 20 2012, 11:06 PM
I worried the long wait between books might have made me build this one up too much and that I wouldn't enjoy it as much when it finally arrived.

I shouldn't have! The Coldest War was better than I'd hoped, I also neglected my family to finish it in one day because I couldn't bring myself to stop reading. I can't wait to see what you do with the third.

Re: Well worth the wait - Ian, Saturday, July 21 2012, 12:03 AM
Brook, that is music to my ears. And a huge relief. Thank you.

Honestly, I had the very same concern. I worry that the extended wait for this book would inadvertently heighten readers' expectations for it. That's been on my mind for a while.

Thanks for the reassurances! I'm delighted that you enjoyed it. (Even if your family isn't... ;-)
